Session 34 : Critical Review of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 – Dr. Ashok K. Jain

Introduction

Centuries ago, a large number of astonishing structures such as Kutub Minar, Taj Mahal and so many incredible palaces and temples were built in stone masonry in various parts of the country. Some of these temples have very tall shikhars with amazing carvings. They have so many delicate columns and non-structural elements. They are standing even today without any damage due to past earthquakes. However, is it possible to build similar stone masonry structures today? NO. IS 1893 (Part 1) will not let you. It has banned such structures explicitly in seismic zone III, IV and V.

The question arises who is wrong? Our ancestors or the modern day IS 1893 (Part 1) code? (Extract from paper of Dr. Ashok K. Jain)

The original paper was presented by Dr. Ashok K. Jain in the meeting of IAStructE on 11th May, 2017. Since then, a number of practicing engineers have made requests to discuss the various issues in more detail. In 2020, BIS has issued amendment no. 2 which is quite exhaustive. Civil Engineering Engineering Online Courses Structural Engneering

There is no age for Learning!

Today, I would like to share an inspiring story of Shree Praveen Vasishth (BSc Civil Engineering, Msc Structural Engineering from Delhi college of Engineering). He is 70+ years old. He served Central Electricity Authority (CEA) at various positions, starting from design assistant to Director T.C.D. for overall span of ~34 years. During his tenure, he was involved in the civil & structural design of thermal power plants across the country. Unfortunately, he got permanent disability before ~3 years.

The physical limitations, substantial reduction in hearing capacity, older age etc. have not at all affected his desire of learning further. He attended our FOUR online courses (STAAD-STR-001, EQ-STR-001, STEEL-STR-001, ETABS-STR-002) in the last year.

I must say that he is one of the most punctual participant and having the highest attendance in all the four courses!

He is truly an inspiration for all of us that there is no age for learning and no physical limitations can restrict you if there is a strong desire for learning!!

We are going to schedule the courses based on demand of engineers. You may fill up the Pre-Registration form wherein you can select the number of courses as per your interest as well as you can suggest the new courses at following link. Your valuable feedback will immensely help us to prioritize the courses.

Civil Engineering Engineering Geotechnical Engineering settlement in structure Structural Engneering

Session 30 : Acceptable value of settlement in structures

Live Technical Discussion Series

(Soil Structure Interaction…)

There is always debate and discussion related to acceptable settlement in the structure. The settlement may be short term settlement or long-term settlement. Also, there may be uniform settlement vs differential settlement. Following are few of the approaches prevailing in practice, :

1) Permissible value of the settlement may be defined based on the tender specifications. Based on the settlement value, allowable bearing pressure will be determined by geotechnical consultant.

 2)  Permissible value of the settlement may be defined based on IS codes related to geotechnical engineering. Based on the settlement value, allowable bearing pressure will be determined.

3)    Acceptable settlement value may be defined by structural engineer considering the functional requirements, stability of the structures, additional stresses in the structures, limit to prevent failure of non-structural elements like piping, utilities, etc. Based on the settlement value, geotechnical engineer will derive the allowable bearing pressure.

Generally, differential settlement component is not mentioned in the geotechnical investigation report as the geotechnical consultant may not be aware about the differential loading on the different foundation as well as variation of pressure across each footing (due to presence of overturning moment). We believe that close interface is required between geotechnical and structural engineer to derive the probable component of the differential settlement.

One more important area would be to consider installing of instruments for monitoring the settlement value during life of the structure.

In view of the above, next live technical discussion is arranged on this important topic wherein we will attempt to answer your specific queries/doubts related to the acceptable values for settlement in the structures.

Session 28 : Modulus of subgrade reaction – Live technical discussion

Modulus of subgrade reaction is very important parameter for design of foundations. Following are some of the approaches which are being followed in the practice:

1)    Approach 1 : Modulus of subgrade reaction is mentioned in the soil report.

2)    Approach 2 : Modulus of subgrade reaction is not mentioned in the soil report and the value is derived in consultation with geotechnical engineer.

3)    Approach 3 : Modulus of subgrade reaction is determined by the structural engineer based on the approximate formula.

It is preferred to follow the approach no. 1 & 2 since there are number of uncertainties involved while deriving the value of Modulus of subgrade reaction and geotechnical engineer is in a better position to suggest the same based on their engineering judgement.

In view of the above, next live technical discussion is arranged on this important topic wherein we will attempt to answer your specific queries/doubts related to the modulus of subgrade reaction.

SESSION 27 – DESIGN LIFE OF RCC STRUCTURES

INTRODUCTION

Structural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Owners and other construction professionals are concerned about the life of a structure. All the stakeholders desire a long life for the structure. Also, there is a lot of curiosity amongst the professionals in the wake of monuments being designed for up to 1000 years.

It is difficult and challenging to predict life of a concrete structure as there are multiple factors affecting the same like structural system, design parameters, concrete mix design, type of reinforcement, quality assurance during execution, protection against corrosion, earthquake resistant design, regular maintenance of the structures – to name a few.

In view of the above, the forthcoming online technical deliberation is on design life of RCC structures. The discussion therefore would be focused on the following important areas:

  • Quality control and assurance in lab and at site.
  • Construction Chemicals in concrete mix , grouting, coatings for reinforcement
