First Facebook Live session of SQVe Consultants : Importance of interface between Geotechnical and Structural engineers

We had an interesting conversation on the subject : Importance of interface between Geotechnical & Structural Engineers. Your further comments / queries on the subject are invited.

For safety of the structure and cost optimisation, appropriate geotechnical investigation is extremely important. Apart from definite statistics, it can be said that the geotechnical failures are one of the major causes for collapse of the structures. In the typical fast track projects, sometimes proper interface is not carried out between geotechnical engineer and structural engineer which may affect adversely the major goals of engineering, i.e. safety of the structure and cost optimisation. Also, the project may get delayed substantially due to inappropriate soil investigation or may be due to lack of interface between geotechnical engineer and structural engineer.

Session 8 : Wind force estimation for tall structures as per IS 875-Part 3

As a part of weekly live technical discussion series, we had very interactive session for estimation of wind force for low rise structures. In the session of 1-Nov-20, we will focus our discussion on Tall buildings.

Wind forces & associated response of Tall buildings is much important not only for design of building but also from the point of view of acceleration & human comfort, surrounding wind flow pattern changes, glazings & facade design, pedestrian level comfort etc. Dynamic response evaluation is critical & particularly across wind response for tall slender buildings. Interference among buildings when they exist in a cluster are still not fully well understood and documented. Hence, our session on 1st November will be dedicated to Tall buildings.

Session no. 7 : Irregularities as per Table no. 5 & 6 of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016

I have received suggestions from engineers to take up the discussion on irregularities as per table no. 5 &6 of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016.

It is a well established fact that the regular building perform better than the irregular buildings during seismic event. In IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016, plan and vertical irregularities are defined in Table no. 5 & 6 of the code. The building is said to be irregular if any one of the irregularity is present in the building. It is mentioned in the code that all the efforts shall be made to eliminate irregularities by modifying architectural planning and structural configurations.

For each irregularity, mathematical limits are defined in the code as well as further action is detailed out whenever the irregularity exceeds the defined limits.

Table no. 5 – Plan irregularities :

  • Torsional irregularity
  • Re-entrant corners
  • Floor slabs having excessive cut-outs or opening
  • Out-of-plane offsets in vertical elements
  • Non-parallel lateral force system

Table no. 6 – Vertical irregularities :

  1. Stiffness irregularity (Soft storey)
  2. Mass irregularity
  3. Vertical geometric irregularity
  4. In-plane discontinuity in Vertical elements resisting lateral force
  5. Strength irregularity (Weak storey)
  6. Floating or stub columns
  7. Irregular modes of oscillation in two principal plan directions

We will discuss each irregularity in detail during live technical discussion. The participants will also share their experiences related to the table no. 5 & 6 of the code.

You may share the specific queries / discussion point which may be taken up during live technical discussion.

Join us on next Sunday (25-Oct-20) for live technical discussion on different irregularities as per table no. 5 and 6 of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016. Please share discussion points for the same in the comment box. You may also circulate this message with the interested engineers in your circle.

Time period for buildings with structural walls as per IS 1893 (Part 1):2016

I have received many queries related to time period calculations for buildings with shear wall in accordance with cl no. 7.6.2 of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016. Time period is very sensitive parameter with respect to earthquake resistant design. In the article, I have shared my understanding related to the clause for further comments/suggestions.

Background:

In the IS 1893 (Part 1):2016, empirical formula for calculation of time period is defined in cl no. 7.6.2. In the clause, formulae are defined for three different types of structural systems:

(only part details are shown in the below content. Please refer the code for complete details).

a)   Bare MRF buildings (without any masonry infills)

·     RC MRF buildings

·     RC-Steel composite MRF building

·     For steel MRF building

b)  Buildings with RC structural walls

c)   All other buildings

For buildings with RC structural walls, the following formula was included in the code when it was published:

Wherein Aw can be calculated using the following formula,

Thereafter, the amendment no. 1 was released in 2017 and in the amendment, the above mentioned formula for Aw was updated as under:

Opinion of the engineers :

I believe that the majority of engineers are of the opinion that the earlier formula which was mentioned in IS 1893 (Part 1):2016 was correct and there is error in the revised formula (amendment no. 1).

My observations on the formula for time period:

1)  In case of open storey, as per cl no. 7.10.4 of the code, when the RC structural walls are provided, the RC structural wall plan density of the building shall be at least 2 percent along each principal direction in seismic zones III, IV and V. RC structural walls of this measure can be adopted even in regular buildings that do not have open storey(s).

  2)  As per cl. no. 7.6.2, the time period for buildings with structural walls need not be less than 0.09*h/SQRT (d). Based on few worked out examples, I observed that the time period derived from earlier Aw formula of the code along with 2% of shear wall in each principal direction was generally near to 0.09*h/SQRT (d).

However, with the amendment formula of Aw, the time period considering 2% of shear wall, was significantly higher than the time period which is derived from 0.09*h/SQRT (d).

With this anomaly, I believe that the majority of engineers are of the opinion that the earlier formula of Aw was appropriate.

3)  In my opinion, the structures with RC structural walls (shear walls) will be the most rigid one as compared to the Bare MRF buildings and the other buildings, as defined in cl no. 7.6.2. I think the upper limit of time period for buildings with RC structural walls may be defined as 0.09*h/SQRT (d). The upper cap limit may be defined or altered for range of height of the building.

4)  I think that the more examples may be worked out for checking appropriateness of the above mentioned formulas.

Stiffness Modifiers as per IS 16700 – IS 15988 – IS 1893 – Live Technical Discussion

We had live interactive session on stiffness modifier as per IS 16700:2017, IS 15988:2013 & IS 1893(Part 1):2016 on 27-Sep-20. There were many interesting questions raised by the participants:

  • What is the difference between factored and unfactored loads as per IS 16700
  • Is there any impact on structural behaviour due to stiffness modifier?
  • Why there are different set of modifiers for wind and seismic loads?
  • Do we need to apply stiffness modifiers for footing design?
  • Can we apply modifiers to only selected members in the structures?
  • And many more….

Link of the recorded session is attached below. Your further comments/suggestions are welcome on the stiffness modifiers.
