INTRODUCTION
Earthquake resistant design related to Indian codes are being updated, gradually to meet the global design practices! The revisions in IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016, IS 13920 : 2016 & IS 16700 : 2017 have generated few practical difficulties. Almost 5+ years have been passed and numerous online / offline sessions arranged by various experts on the different platforms. Still there are practical difficulties in the industry during the implementation of the various clauses of these standards.
In view of the above, we designed an online course EQ-STR-002, related to earthquake resistant design to focus on the fundamentals of earthquake resistant design, discussions on important clauses of the IS codes & implementation of the clauses in the software ETABS & STAAD.Pro.
The course covered important aspects related to earthquake resistant design, wherein generally the practicing engineers are facing the difficulties. We discussed the same in detail along with the possible solutions. The overall objective of the course is to discuss the fundamentals of earthquake resistant design which enables the practicing engineers to take an appropriate engineering decision, in case of ambiguities.
We have recorded all the sessions and the same are uploaded on the portal so that the interested engineers can learn the details as per their convenient time.

Dr. Ashok K. Jain – Retd. Professor of Civil Engineering, I.I.T.
Dr. Ashok Jain is currently a structural consultant having over 40 years of experience. Formerly, a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee. Dr. Jain received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI in 1978. He received gold and silver medals in B.E. (Civil Engineering) and M.E. (Structural Engineering) at the University of Roorkee, Roorkee. He is well known for imparting latest knowledge on each subject/topic through latest analytic tools such as MATLAB, MS Excel, SAP2000, and ETABS.
Dr. Jain has published over 50 refereed journal papers and over 60 conference papers on various topics. He has authored five text books:
- Dynamics of Structures with MATLAB Applications, Published by Pearson (2016)
- Reinforced Concrete – Limit State Design now in its 7th edition (2012) – This book has the distinction of being the first book on the subject published in 1983 in India and enjoys excellent reputation till date.
- Advanced Structural Engineering with Finite Element Method, 4th edition (due 2022)
- Elementary Structural Analysis, 3rd edition (due 2022)
- Fortran programming, second edition (1990) – now discontinued
He has delivered keynote addresses in many conferences and conducted short specialist courses on Reinforced Concrete, water retaining structures, ductile detailing of structures, dynamics of structures and earthquake resistant design.
Bhavin Shah – Founder & CEO, SQVe Consultants
He is passionate about Engineering profession with two decades of experience. He is having a dream for enhancing the engineering profession in different organisations. He completed graduation in Civil Engineering and Masters in Structures from Sardar Patel University. He is having unique experience of working in the specialized firm of civil / structural consultancy which grew as multidisciplinary firm (VMS), large multidisciplinary firm (L&T Chiyoda Ltd.) and owner-based engineering set up (Adani Infra (I) Ltd.). He is pursuing Ph.D. in Structural Engineering related to earthquake resistant design of industrial structures.
