INTRODUCTION
Welding can become weak link in the steel structures if not designed appropriately or quality standards are not met. Hence, the welding is extremely important in the steel structures. Quality of welding is one of the major concern area for steel structures in our country due to lack of the qualified welders. Apart from structural design aspects there are multiples parameters or details involved in the welding which may be suitably addressed by metallurgy experts. Generally, the structural engineers have queries related to the welding such as selection of welding electrode, correct procedure for welding, welding defects, NDT tests for welding, specification in drawings/tender, details to be checked during site visit related to welding, etc.
In view of the above, we are glad to launch a unique online course STEEL-STR-003 to address the above mentioned areas. The course will be conducted jointly by the experts in the field of metallurgy and structural engineering. The course is designed in an interactive mode so that the queries/doubts of the participants can be addressed effectively.
Brief about earlier online courses: STEEL-STR-001 & STEEL-STR-002:
We arranged online courses related to design of steel structures, named as STEEL-STR-001** (Decode IS 800:2007 along with software) and STEEL-STR-002** (design of connections for steel structures) which had been attended by 200+ engineers so far. WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS COURSE?
The course is designed by the experienced Engineers (Dr. Jayanta Kumar Saha & Mr. Bhavin Shah) who have more than three decades of experience in the field of structural & Application Engineering.
- The entire course is designed from the practical aspects which can be readily used in the real life projects.
- The course is designed to have an interactive mode so that the problems / doubts of the participants can be addressed effectively.
- A WhatsApp group will be created for quick communication between the participants and the faculty members. The participants will be able to share the discussion points, doubts, queries, etc. in the group. The details in the group will be collated for further discussion in the next session.
- All the sessions will be recorded and recording of each session will be shared within few hours. If someone miss out the live session then he/she can go through the recording before attending the next session. The participants can share the doubts/queries in the WhatsApp group, after going through the recording which will be addressed in the next session.
- Recording will be available with all the participants for 180 days.
- Certificate will be issued on successful completion of the online course (min. 80% attendance is required.)

Dr. Jayanta Kumar Saha – Director, S J Engineering & Consulting and Visiting Professor (Calcutta University & IIT )
Dr. Jayanta Kumar Saha have overall 38 years of experience. He worked with Institute for Steel Developments & Growth as General Manager & had pursued sponsored/technical projects on steel applications, metallurgical engineering, conducting skill development programmes for professionals and Engineering students.
He also worked Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, CSIR: Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, and Philips India Ltd. Obtained B.E in Metallurgical & Materials Engg from IIEST, Shibpur, M.Tech in Production Engg from IIT, Madras & Ph.D in Met & Matl Engg from Jadavpur University. Served as distinguished vising professor under AICTE-INAE Industry-Academic scheme for IIEST, Shibpur & Jadavpur University.
Recipient of National Corrosion Awareness award from SSPC, Excellence in Corrosion Science &Technology from NACE International and Mascot award from ECSI, IISc Bangalore. Published 25 Guidebooks on structural steel, welding / fabrication, Corrosion & Fire protections, Reinforcement Bars, Stainless steel etc and 30 technical papers. Represented Bureau of Indian standards in MTDC, MTD4, MTD24 & CED54 committees & CII Corrosion Management council. Had been to overseas to carry out collaborative applied research work on steel structure protections from corrosion & fire.
Bhavin Shah – Founder & CEO, SQVe Consultants
He is passionate about Engineering profession with two decades of experience. He is having a dream for enhancing the engineering profession in different organisations. He completed graduation in Civil Engineering and Masters in Structures from Sardar Patel University. He is having unique experience of working in the specialized firm of civil / structural consultancy which grew as multidisciplinary firm (VMS), large multidisciplinary firm (L&T Chiyoda Ltd.) and owner based engineering set up (Adani Infra (I) Ltd.). He worked in different organisations at different levels, starting from junior design engineer to CEO. He is Founder & CEO of SQVe Consultants. He is pursuing Ph.D. in Structural Engineering related to earthquake resistant design of industrial steel structures.
METHODOLOGY
- The course will spread over ~two weeks with approximate 11+ contact hours.
- During training period, the interaction can be done with faculty and the participants using WhatsApp.
- Participants will have ample opportunities for raising their doubts / queries related to the subject.
- The online sessions will be conducted using ZOOM software.
