INTRODUCTION
LIVE TECHNICAL DISCUSSION SERIES
SQVe is probably a single platform wherein couple of live discussions related to draft standard for “earthquake resistant design and detailing of steel buildings” were organised in month of June, 2022. The earlier recorded sessions are available at our YouTube channel. Recently, BIS has published the standard IS 18168:2023. Following shows few of the major changes in the document:
- The document to be referred when there is conflict with section 12 of IS 800:2007
- The general concepts adopted in this standard for buildings are applicable also for other types of structures; in particular, provisions of this standard may be taken as a guide for design of components of industrial structures and steel bridges.
- Provisions of this standard are applicable for SMRF, SCBF and EBF
- Material may be used up to E350 (B0 or C) as per IS 2062
- Table-2 is added for section classification
- Additional load combinations are mentioned
- Slenderness ratio of beam is limited in the region of plastic hinge formation
- The slenderness ratio of unbraced length of columns shall be less than 75.
- Criteria defined for the bracing size
- Requirement for column-beam strength ratio is identified.
- Criteria defined for design of fixed column base and pinned column base
- Design methodology included for shear link of EBF frame, etc.
In summary, there are significant changes as compared to the section 12 of IS 800:2007. In our upcoming live technical discussion, we will have quick overview of the document and will highlight major changes with reference to the current design practices. We will arrange few more sessions as per requirements of the engineers.
In the following registration form, you may share the specific discussion points. The same would help us to structure the discussion.

DYN-STR-001: Design of Machine Foundations
we are glad to launch a unique online course (DYN-STR-001) which addresses the step-by-step approach for the machine foundations. We will start with basics of structural dynamics like single degree of freedom, free vibration, forced vibration, damping, multi degree of freedom, resonance, etc. along with examples in the software. Thereafter, we will discuss about different types of machines, dynamic loads generated from the machines, soil dynamics, spring calculations for FEM analysis, etc. We will also address the requirements of design standards such as IS 2974 & ACI 351 3R 04. Finally, we will take up actual modelling in the software for block foundation supporting reciprocating machine, block foundation supporting centrifugal machine and table top foundation supporting centrifugal machine. Detailed dynamic analysis will be performed in the software STAAD Pro and the important do’s and don’ts will be highlighted for the software application.
The course will commence from 21-SEP-23.
