INTRODUCTION
LIVE TECHNICAL DISCUSSION SERIES
Thank you all for actively participating in the live technical discussions related to draft IS 1893 (Part 1) & IS 1893 (Part 2). If you have missed out the sessions, then you may go through the recordings at following link:
Recently, BIS has published draft standard of IS 1893 (Part 1) and IS 1893 (Part 2).
Doc. No. | Title |
CED 39(22343)WC | Draft Indian Standard Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures Part 1 General Provisions [Seventh Revision of IS 1893 (Part 1)] |
CED 39(22345)WC | Draft Indian Standard Criteria for earthquake resistant design of structures Part 2 Buildings [Seventh revision of IS 1893 (Part 1)] |
Draft standard of IS 1893 (Part 1) contains general provisions on earthquake hazard applicable to all structures.
Draft standard of IS 1893 (Part 2) contains provisions specific to earthquake resistant design of buildings.

There are significant changes proposed in the draft standards, few of the same are mentioned below:
IS 1893 (Part 1)
- Earthquake zone map is revised
- Design horizontal acceleration coefficients are specified for strength and serviceability
- Design methodology included for Architectural Elements and Utilities (AEU)
- Categories of structures are included with requirement of different return period of earthquakes for strength and serviceability
- Procedure included for site specific earthquake hazard
- Performance expectation of the structure is detailed out.
- Range of modulus of subgrade reaction is mentioned.
- Soil stiffness calculations are added, etc.
IS 1893 (Part 2)
- Criteria are added for masonry buildings and steel buildings
- Response reduction factors are modified and renamed as Elastic force reduction factors
- Provisions on torsion is updated
- Structural plan density of the structural walls is varied with earthquake zone
- For RCC buildings, stiffness modifiers have same values for strength and serviceability
- Limits on lateral storey drift in building is mentioned with respect to seismic zone
- Concept of torsional flexibility is added
- Provisions added for buildings on sloping ground
- Displacement calculations added for Architectural elements and utilities
- Admissible structural systems in RC buildings for different earthquake zone is added.
- Admissible structural systems in Steel buildings for different earthquake zone is added.
- For steel buildings, for seismic zone 4, SMRF and EBF are suggested. For zone 5 & 6, only EBF is allowed, etc.
Last date for sending the comments to BIS is 25-Jun-2023.
As there are significant changes in the draft standards, we are planning to conduct the multiple sessions for the same. 3rd session is planned on 15-JUN-23.
Our aim is to highlight the practical difficulties which may arise if the draft documents are published as national standards without any changes. Following experts will join the session:
- Dr. Ashok K. Jain – Retd. Professor of Civil Engineering, I.I.T. Roorkee
- Er. Rudra Nevatia – Consulting engineer
- Er. Kamal Parekh – MD & CEO, Shri Sarjan Technocrats Pvt. Ltd
- Er. Bhavin Shah – Founder & CEO, SQVe Consultants
Following are some of the topics which will be discussed during the session:
- Comparison of design base shear between draft IS1893 & IS 1893 (Part 1):2016
- EBF is the only allowed frame in seismic zone 5 & 6.
- Comments on elastic response reduction factor (as per table 3)
- Principles of design of structures and correlation with buildings ( Para no. 7 of IS 1893- Part 1)
- Structural plan density (SPD) – Practical difficulties in accommodating shear wall as per SPD, Behaviour of the structure with different values of SPD
- Panel discussion wherein discussion points suggested by the engineers through registration form will be discussed.
We will also attempt to address few of the questions received from participants through live chat.
In the following registration form, you may share the specific discussion points related to the draft standards which may be taken up during the live session.
If you are willing to address the audience as a speaker then please connect with us through email address: contact@sqveconsultants.com

RCC-STR-001: Design of RCC structures
We are receiving number of queries related to design of RCC structures based on IS 456:2000 and IS 13920:2016 with a specific focus on the software applications in STAAD Pro, RCDC and ETABS. In this regard, we are glad to launch a unique online course which addresses few of the practical difficulties being faced by the engineers for design of RCC structures. In the course, we will discuss the required concepts and fundamentals along with the software. We will generate various study models for quick comparison of the results from different software. The results will be compared and the important findings will be discussed in detail. The same will be extremely useful for preparation of in-house check-list, working procedure, Do’s and Don’ts, etc.
The course will commence from 21-JUN-23.
