I am a budding geotechnical engineering professional. For three years I have worked as faculty in NIT and recently joined as project fellow- geotechnical engineering in a research Institute. Now I am in the transition phase of my career ie, shifting from academics to industry. My desire to become a geotechnical engineering consultant inspired me to join this course. As I don’t have much industrial exposure, attending the course GEO-STR-001 helped me to gain a lot of practical knowledge related to geotechnical engineering. Especially the discussions related to soil investigation, interpretation of soil report and interactive sessions were really amazing. Queries of other participants and the discussions associated with it,were really informative, as it mainly focussed on current industrial practices. Thank you Vivek sir and Bhavin sir for giving this wonderful opportunity. Hoping for a better support in my future endeavours too. Also expecting further courses related to this, in the coming future.

I am pursuing masters in structural engineering and steel was the topic that I found always challenging since my B.Tech times. Moreover this is also a missing topic for the syllabus of many universities in masters program. To understand its theory ,and execute it practically in software is really challenging and need a mentor for that. I’ve been following Bhavin sir from last few months and was it was my good decision to choose him as a guide. By the course STEEL-STR-001, now I can feel that I am in a position to explore boundaries of IS code, and also I’m enthusiastic to see how Euro code, AISC code and other countries code tackles the problem which sounds to be complicated in IS code.

Session 56: Lessons learned from sequential EQs in Turkey

    INTRODUCTION

    LIVE TECHNICAL DISCUSSION SERIES

◼ Sequential of EQs were happened. Magnitude 7.8 happened at 4 am, and Magnitude 7.5 happened at 1 pm (many 6.5 in between). Record from one station indicates that PGA of the first mainshock was around ~0.7g. The spectral acceleration exceeded 2g around 0.5-0.6 seconds. Additionally, the vertical acceleration was ~1.4g.

◼ Over 10,000 buildings were collapsed by the EQs. And many of the buildings were built before 2000. So, they were designed based on old Turkish Code. Collapses were mostly multi-story/mid-rise (5-20 stories). They were mainly concrete buildings.

◼ Collapses should be evaluated in two categories; are collapses before the second mainshock and collapses after the second mainshock (plus aftershocks).

◼ Collapses before the second mainshock: Collapsed buildings were designed based on reduced EQ loads (using response modification factor (R)) by relying on ductility; however, the collapses showed nonductile behavior (brittle). Please, check both ductile and brittle collapse on the graph below. Basic ductile design philosophy is “survive the main shock, and get out of the building safely”. However, the collapses indicate that design reinforcements were didn’t supplied as required by the code. Designers – authority of jurisdictions – constructors should be one mechanism to follow the code instructions.

◼ Collapses after the second mainshock: Many of the collapses were obtained after the second main shock (Magnitude 7.5). The first main shock and aftershocks softened/weakened/hinged buildings, and the second mainshock destroyed most of the softened buildings. This is because of P-delta (large deformation). Why? Because it causes negative tangent stiffness on the buildings, and when it exceeds the plastic stiffness (hinged stiffness), buildings are collapsed due to instability. And the other consideration is fracture due to low cycle fatigue. Ductile elements have a finite accumulative strain capacity.

◼ Important lessons: One of the important lessons is missing sequential shocks specification on every seismic code in the world. It might be great research to study performance-based design for sequential shocks! Other one is determining/reviewing/retrofitting old buildings. Old buildings should get engineering services based on new code provisions.

In the upcoming live event, Dr. T. Deniz Uludag will join us for the very important discussion.

Please note that the discussion will be based on initial analysis/thoughts. We may organise more numbers of sessions in the future as and when more detailed analysis is shared by the investigation teams.

It would be great if you can share your specific queries/doubts related to Turkey EQs in advance which would help us to structure the flow of discussion.

In the following registration form, you may share the specific doubts/questions related to the topic or you may share your point of view, discussion points, etc. which may be addressed during the session.

    Session 34 : Critical Review of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 – Dr. Ashok K. Jain

    Introduction

Centuries ago, a large number of astonishing structures such as Kutub Minar, Taj Mahal and so many incredible palaces and temples were built in stone masonry in various parts of the country. Some of these temples have very tall shikhars with amazing carvings. They have so many delicate columns and non-structural elements. They are standing even today without any damage due to past earthquakes. However, is it possible to build similar stone masonry structures today? NO. IS 1893 (Part 1) will not let you. It has banned such structures explicitly in seismic zone III, IV and V.

The question arises who is wrong? Our ancestors or the modern day IS 1893 (Part 1) code? (Extract from paper of Dr. Ashok K. Jain)

The original paper was presented by Dr. Ashok K. Jain in the meeting of IAStructE on 11th May, 2017. Since then, a number of practicing engineers have made requests to discuss the various issues in more detail. In 2020, BIS has issued amendment no. 2 which is quite exhaustive. Recently, he has modified the document based on request of the practicing engineers.

In the upcoming live technical discussion, Dr. Ashok K. Jain will share his critical review about IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016.

    About Speaker

Dr. Ashok K. Jain is currently a structural consultant having over 40 years of experience. Formerly, a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee. (Structural Engineering) at the University of Roorkee, Roorkee. He is well known for imparting latest knowledge on each subject/topic through latest analytic tools such as MATLAB, MS Excel, SAP2000, and ETABS.

Dr. Jain has published over 50 refereed journal papers and over 60 conference papers on various topics. He has authored five text books:

    • Dynamics of Structures with MATLAB Applications, Published by Pearson (2016)
    • Reinforced Concrete – Limit State Design now in its 7th edition (2012) – This book has the distinction of being the first book on the subject published in 1983 in India and enjoys excellent reputation till date.
    • Advanced Structural Engineering with Finite Element Method, 3rd edition (2015)
    • Strength of Materials and Structural Analysis, 2nd edition (2008)
    • Fortran programming, second edition (1990) – now discontinued

Today, I would like to share an inspiring story of Shree Praveen Vasishth (BSc Civil Engineering, Msc Structural Engineering from Delhi college of Engineering). He is 70+ years old. He served Central Electricity Authority (CEA) at various positions, starting from design assistant to Director T.C.D. for overall span of ~34 years. During his tenure, he was involved in the civil & structural design of thermal power plants across the country. Unfortunately, he got permanent disability before ~3 years.

The physical limitations, substantial reduction in hearing capacity, older age etc. have not at all affected his desire of learning further. He attended our FOUR online courses (STAAD-STR-001, EQ-STR-001, STEEL-STR-001, ETABS-STR-002) in the last year.

I must say that he is one of the most punctual participant and having the highest attendance in all the four courses!

He is truly an inspiration for all of us that there is no age for learning and no physical limitations can restrict you if there is a strong desire for learning!!

We are going to schedule the courses based on demand of engineers. You may fill up the Pre-Registration form wherein you can select the number of courses as per your interest as well as you can suggest the new courses at following link. Your valuable feedback will immensely help us to prioritize the courses.

Session 24 : Stiffness modifiers as per IS codes

The concept of stiffness modifiers was introduced for the first time in IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016. The clause no. 6.4.3.1 of the code defines requirements for structural analysis. It is mentioned in the clause that for structural analysis, we should consider reduced moment of inertial for RCC structures. For columns, 70 percent of Igross should be considered and for beams, 35 percent of Igross to be considered. Thereafter, stiffness modifiers were defined in IS 16700 as well. There are certain practical difficulties as it is a relatively new concept for the Indian Standards.

We arranged couple of live technical discussions earlier on the subject. However, still we are receiving queries from the engineers as well as there are few requests for arranging the live discussion on the stiffness modifiers.

In view of the above, next live technical discussion is planned on 25-SEP-21 (Saturday) at 7:00 PM.

Speaker : Bhavin Shah, Founder & CEO – SQVe Consultants

At first I never expected the sessions which are going to be conducted would be so knowledgeable. Day by day listening to Abhay sir touching every aspect from the codal point of view, few from his own experience. The mixture of everything made this course WIND-STR-002 very valuable and useful. Before this course I was trying to learn from everywhere how does this wind dynamic forces are to be calculated but through SQVE consultants arranging this webinar and learning under experience fraternity was worthwhile.

    Shefali Thakkar

STEEL-STR-001 was the best interactive course ,wherein all practical facts and limitations those are related with prevailing standards, software and practices were discussed. Vision was provided to participate towards solving such prevailing limitations rather following the same collaboratively. Course content was described very effectively and constant encouragement on experiments of the course deliverables and raising doubts and solving the same. Effective time management by faculty to satisfy all participants’ queries along with effective delivery of course content. 24 hour interaction facility was made available for solving course related queries.

    REVA VENU V M

    Sharad Gupta

I am very grateful to Er. Dr. Abhay Gupta and Mr. Bhavin Shah for sharing your knowledge with us even though we have the same profession. Your course WIND-STR-002 helped me to clear many of the doubts I had sine the past 20 years.

    Dhirender Singh Bisht

    Session 11 : Amendment no. 2 for IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 & IS 13920 : 2016

Recently, BIS published the amendments related to IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016 & IS 13920 in November, 2020. The article shows some of the major changes made in the code as per my understanding. Only brief details are mentioned below, for details please refer the amendments.

    Amendment no. 2 of IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016

    1.     Clause related to vertical earthquake shaking is modified. The requirements are added for embankments, dams, bridges, etc. Also, the criteria for consideration of vertical earthquake shaking are modified.

    2.     The methodology for calculation of torsional irregularity is updated. The maximum displacement should be checked against the average displacement as against the minimum displacement in the previous version of the code. For more details, please refer the amendment.

     3.     For a building with re-entrant corners, three dimensional dynamic analysis to be performed with the flexible floor diaphragm. If there is a rigid diaphragm in the building then two separate analysis to be performed, firstly with flexible diaphragm and secondly with the rigid diaphragm. The worst effects to be considered from both the analysis.

     4.     For out of plane offset in vertical elements, the forces and moments due to earthquake effects in the elements connecting the two vertical elements with out of plane offset elements, the vertical element supporting the offset, and connections shall be enhanced by a factor of at least 2.5.

     5.     The provisions for stiffness irregularity are further clarified and few changes are made as well. In the note, it is mentioned that this provision is not applicable to such storeys, which have: (a) lower height, where services and utilities are housed, or (b) outrigger frame members placed in them.

     6.     For weak storey irregularity – buildings with strength irregularity shall not be permitted. In case, the weak storey is because of URM infills, provisions of 7.10 shall be followed.

     7.     Floating columns – Such columns are likely to cause concentrated damage in the structure, and are undesirable. A building with floating columns shall not be permitted, if the floating columns are part of or supporting the primary lateral load resisting system.’

     8.     Irregularity related to “Irregular Modes of Oscillation in Two Principal Plan Directions” is further clarified. It is also mentioned that this provision is not applicable to buildings with large podiums in the lower storeys.

     9.     For importance factor, “school” is replaced with the “educational building”.

     10.  OBF is not allowed in seismic zone III, IV & V.

     11.  Provisions for flat slab – structural wall system are further clarified.

     12.  Formula for Aw is modified and now it is same as when the code was published in 2016. It is mentioned that The value of Ta obtained shall neither be taken to be more than that given in 7.6.2 (a) nor less than that given in 7.6.2 (c).

     13.  In case of URM, RC members shall be designed for the governing combinations of stress resultants arising from structural analysis of:

    a) Bare frame building, and

    b) Frame building with URM infills.

    14. For other details, please refer the amendment.

     Amendment no. 2 of IS 13920 : 2016

    1.    Steel reinforcement shall comply with all of the following:

    a) Elongation shall be at least 14.5 percent,

    b) Ratio of ultimate stress to 0.2 percent proof stress shall not exceed 1.25,

    c) Ratio of ultimate stress to 0.2 percent proof stress shall be at least 1.15, and

    d) Steel shall be only of strength grades with minimum 0.2 percent proof stress of 415 MPa, 500 MPa or 550 MPa, in addition to other requirements of IS 1786.’

     2.     In cl no. 9.1.1, modifications are made for calculation of nominal shear strength of concrete in a beam-column joint.

    3.     In cl no. 9.1.2, provisions related to design shear stress demand are further clarified.

    4. For other details, please refer the amendment.
