IS 1893 (Part 4)

INTRODUCTION

SQVE STRUCTURAL SUMMIT

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released a draft of the Indian Standard Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures, Part 4 – Industrial Structures. This document marks the third revision of IS 1893 (Part 4) and incorporates significant updates aimed at improving the seismic resilience of industrial structures.

Following are major changes in the document as mentioned in forward part:

  • Categorisation of industrial structures have been aligned with the categorisation of structures provided in IS 1893 (Part 1)
  •  Importance factors have been adjusted in view of the revised earthquake hazard
  • Response reduction factor has been renamed as Elastic Force Reduction Factor and values have been revised for some structural systems
  •  Provisions on interaction effects between primary and secondary systems have been revised
  • Generation of In-structure Response Spectra (ISRS) for use in design of secondary systems brought under the purview of this standard
  • Operational and Functional Components (OFCs) defined and procedures for design of OFCs included
  • Estimation of natural period for stack-like structure included up to first three modes and clarity on the limitation of simplified method is provided
  • Provisions on chimneys and stacks have been revised, etc.

There are significant changes in the document which may impact the current design practices related to industrial structures.

Our overall aim is to spread awareness about the draft document and encourage engineers to share their comments / suggestions to relevant BIS technical committee.

RCC-STR-003: Foundation Engineering (Part 1)

Participants will gain insights into the comparative analysis of software-generated results against manual calculations, ensuring a robust understanding of foundation behavior. Session 87 – IS 1893 (Part 4):2024

INTRODUCTION

SQVE STRUCTURAL SUMMIT

IS 1893 (Part 4):2024, titled “Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures Part 4: Industrial Structures Including Stack-Like Structures,” is the second revision of this standard, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in 2024.

This standard provides guidelines for the seismic design and construction of industrial structures, including stack-like structures, to ensure their resilience during earthquakes.

Based on request of few engineers, we will discuss few of the important areas from the document:

  1. When to consider IS 1893 (Part 4): 2024 for design of the structure?
  2. What are the different categories considered in the document?
  3. Basic guidelines for modelling industrial structure
  4. Time period for industrial structures
  5. Effect of damping on the seismic force
  6. Simultaneous consideration of seismic loads from three directions
  7. Requirement of P-Delta analysis
  8. Is it required to perform nonlinear time-history analysis?
  9. Load combinations to be considered for design of the structure, etc.

Industrial structures are highly irregular to meet the functional requirements and hence they are vulnerable to the seismic events. For earthquake resistant design of industrial structures, IS 1893 (Part 4) : 2015 needs to be followed. Around 2021, the revised draft code was circulated by BIS. However, the updated code has not been issued yet.
