INTRODUCTION
SQVE STRUCTURAL SUMMIT
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released a draft of the Indian Standard Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures, Part 4 – Industrial Structures. This document marks the third revision of IS 1893 (Part 4) and incorporates significant updates aimed at improving the seismic resilience of industrial structures.
Following are major changes in the document as mentioned in forward part:
- Categorisation of industrial structures have been aligned with the categorisation of structures provided in IS 1893 (Part 1)
- Importance factors have been adjusted in view of the revised earthquake hazard
- Response reduction factor has been renamed as Elastic Force Reduction Factor and values have been revised for some structural systems
- Provisions on interaction effects between primary and secondary systems have been revised
- Generation of In-structure Response Spectra (ISRS) for use in design of secondary systems brought under the purview of this standard
- Operational and Functional Components (OFCs) defined and procedures for design of OFCs included
- Estimation of natural period for stack-like structure included up to first three modes and clarity on the limitation of simplified method is provided
- Provisions on chimneys and stacks have been revised, etc.
There are significant changes in the document which may impact the current design practices related to industrial structures.

Our overall aim is to spread awareness about the draft document and encourage engineers to share their comments / suggestions to relevant BIS technical committee.

RCC-STR-003: Foundation Engineering (Part 1)

The course will provide a comprehensive understanding of the finite element analysis of foundations, focusing on design using SAFE and STAAD Foundation Advanced. Participants will gain insights into the comparative analysis of software-generated results against manual calculations, ensuring a robust understanding of foundation behavior. A key aspect of the course is the geotechnical-structural interface, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between geotechnical and structural engineers while also covering essential IS codes related to geotechnical engineering. The foundation design module will include hands-on exercises using SAFE as per IS 456:2000, with an option to explore STAAD Foundation Advanced as per ACI 318 upon request. Case studies will illustrate real-world applications, covering isolated foundations, combined foundations, octagonal foundations for tall vertical vessels in the oil and gas industry, foundations for cantilever retaining walls, transmission line towers, annular raft foundations for chimneys, and raft foundations for tall buildings. Additionally, the course will highlight ways to enhance the quality of geotechnical investigations, focusing on critical areas that can improve the accuracy and reliability of soil investigations.

ONG-STR-001: Design of Pipe Rack | Online course

A process pipe rack in the oil and gas industry is a critical structural framework that supports and organizes process pipelines, utility pipelines, electrical cable tray, instrument cable tray, etc. The course will begin with an overview of refinery processes, various process units, function of pipe rack, etc. We will also highlight important interface areas with different disciplines, including process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, electrical and equipment, ensuring a holistic understanding of multidisciplinary coordination for the pipe rack. We will cover details of each step for structural design of the pipe rack, starting from understanding functional requirements, important points to be checked in input documents, preparation of structural system, generating computer model, load calculations and application in the software, analysis & design of pipe rack, connection design, foundation design of pipe rack, etc. Throughout the program, we will cover important provisions of American codes such as ASCE 7-16, AISC 360-16, AISC 341-16, ACI 318-19, etc. along with software applications in STAAD Pro, RAM Connection & RCDC.
