INTRODUCTION
SQVE STRUCTURAL SUMMIT
Structural design in the maritime sector presents distinct challenges compared to onshore projects. Maritime structures must withstand harsh environmental conditions like high winds, tidal ranges, strong currents, waves, and saltwater corrosion, all of which can compromise their integrity over time. These structures face dynamic loads from waves and wind, leading to fatigue and requiring robust design solutions. Constant exposure to saltwater accelerates material degradation, making advanced corrosion protection critical for long-term durability.
Designing for maritime environments demands specialized skills, including expertise in hydrodynamics, corrosion prevention, and dynamic load analysis. Engineers must be proficient in selecting marine construction materials and developing low-maintenance designs due to the difficulty of accessing these structures for repairs. However, there is a shortage of engineers with these competencies, as few institutions in India offer formal training in maritime structural design. This skills gap can lead to project delays, higher costs, and safety concerns, highlighting the urgent need for targeted education and training programs.
Key Discussion Points for the Upcoming Session:
- What are the structures included in maritime sector?
- What skills do young engineers need to develop to succeed in maritime structural design?
- Are there specific software or tools that engineers must be proficient in to work in maritime design?
- How does the maritime sector differ from onshore structural design in terms of the professional expertise required?
- What is the demand for maritime structural engineers, both in India and globally?
- What career pathways or specializations are available within maritime structural design?
- What are some common misconceptions about maritime structural design?
- How does one transition from a conventional structural engineering background into the maritime sector?
- Discuss some of the most exciting projects in maritime structural design that could inspire young engineers.
- What opportunities exist for engineers in India to receive training in maritime structural design?, etc.
This discussion will highlight career opportunities and essential skills for excelling in this specialized field.
You may share specific queries or doubts related to maritime sector which you would like to get it addressed in the session. We will attempt to include the same in the discussion.

ONG-STR-001: Design of Pipe Rack | Online course
A process pipe rack in the oil and gas industry is a critical structural framework that supports and organizes process pipelines, utility pipelines, electrical cable tray, instrument cable tray, etc. The course will begin with an overview of refinery processes, various process units, function of pipe rack, etc. We will also highlight important interface areas with different disciplines, including process, piping, electrical, instrumentation, electrical and equipment, ensuring a holistic understanding of multidisciplinary coordination for the pipe rack. We will cover details of each step for structural design of the pipe rack, starting from understanding functional requirements, important points to be checked in input documents, preparation of structural system, generating computer model, load calculations and application in the software, analysis & design of pipe rack, connection design, foundation design of pipe rack, etc. Throughout the program, we will cover important provisions of American codes such as ASCE 7-16, AISC 360-16, AISC 341-16, ACI 318-19, etc. along with software applications in STAAD Pro, RAM Connection & RCDC.
