INTRODUCTION
SQVE STRUCTURAL SUMMIT
RC foundations are the most important elements in any type of structure, as they transfer all the loads that come on the superstructure to the ground below. RC foundations are designed such that the safe bearing capacity of the soil at the site is not exceeded, to have adequate safety against sliding, overturning or pull-out and to keep the total and the differential settlements within allowable limits. Foundation failures are difficult to rectify and may endanger the entire building. In addition, as foundations will be buried inside the ground, it is difficult to monitor or repair them.
Failure of foundations may occur due to poor soil conditions, improper
drainage, changes in the water table, tree roots, construction errors, weather conditions or expansive soils. If any foundation failure is noticed or suspected, it is important to have the foundation inspected by a qualified geotechnical engineer and remedial measures undertaken. Soil failures are classified as bearing capacity failures, bulging or swelling of soil, sliding, liquefaction and lateral spreading. Foundation engineers are urged to study such failures, in order to not repeat such mistakes in their own projects.
It’s essential for both geotechnical and structural engineers to maintain open communication and address any discrepancies or uncertainties in the geotechnical report promptly. Regular collaboration and a thorough review process can help identify and rectify potential mistakes before they impact the structural design and construction process.
In the session, Dr. Subramanian Narayanan will join with us and he will share few case studies related to the foundation failures. We will also discuss few of the relevant points received from the participants either through registration form or through live chat during the session.
Schedule
DATE : 30-MAR-24
TIME : 7:30PM TO 8:30PM IST
Brief about Expert
Dr. Subramanian Narayanan wrote a very successful book on Steel Structures, was the first comprehensive book based on IS 800:2007. This was followed by another outstanding book on RC Design. Both the books received award for best book from ACCE(I). His book on Space Structures also received this award in 2000, thus he has the distinction of hitting hattrick. Always keen to mentor young structural engineers through Structural Engineering Forum of India, sharing experiences and lessons learnt through books and technical papers.
HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE EVENT?
Registration is FREE.
You may mention your experiences, views, doubts, etc. related to foundation failures in the following registration form. We will discuss the same during the live session.

STEEL-STR-007: Design of PEB Structures (Part 1) | Warehouse | STAAD Pro | RAM Connections | RCDC
The course will commence from 28-MAR-24.
Highlights of the course:
a) We will start the course with basic understanding of structural behaviour and stability concepts for shed type of structure. The important limit states such as flexure buckling, lateral torsional buckling, local buckling, etc. will be explained through finite element modelling of the individual members.
b) Interaction between different structural elements such as column, rafter, purlin, sag rod, girts, sheeting, flange bracing, etc. will be explained in detail.
c) Case study of two warehouse structures (with and without central column), covering the following steps:

d) Design of the structures will be performed using IS 800 : 2007.
e) Analysis and design will be performed using software STAAD Pro, RAM connection and RCDC.
f) Manual calculations for verifying design from the software, etc.
